In the earlier times, the hoses manufactured with rubber were designed for hydraulic uses. However, when these hoses were exposed to carbon dioxide, they could not resist deterioration. On inspecting the reason, it was found that there were reinforcing braids and fittings made from carbon steel, which is susceptible to corrosion from the carbonic acid that is formed from a combination of CO2 and moisture. Some time later, stainless steel hoses were introduced. This attempt was better than the previous ones in remaining flexible in the cold but lead to much harder and heavier hoses. Additionally, the corrugation inside the metal hose could trap solid CO2 ice, interrupting the CO2 transfer.
