All You Wanted To Know About Acetylene and Acetylene Valves

Acetylene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon called alkynes or acetylenes. The usefulness of Acetylene due to the variety of triple bonds it forms as well as the weak hydrogen atoms are replaceable with strong alkalies to form acetylide salts.

Acetylene is a compressed gas that is stored in the liquid state and used as a fuel. When the cylinder valve is opened, the pressure is released and that portion of the liquid gets converted into gas. The tank should always be in an upright position with the acetylene valve end up for the acetylene cylinder to work properly.

Acetylene is a colorless gas which has a pleasant odor and is prepared by reaction of water with calcium carbide and contains traces of phosphine imparting it a garlic-like odor. It is also produced by passing a hydrocarbon through an electric arc or by partial combustion of methane with oxygen or air. Pure acetylene when under more than 15 pounds psi pressure or in a liquid state or solid form explodes with extreme violence

Industries where acetylene is used

Acetylene is used in the automotive and transport equipment industry. It is a key component in automotive manufacture as it provides a precise source of carbon for low pressure carburizing.

Acetylene is widely used in metal fabrication, welding and cutting processes due to its property of flame temperature. it is lighter than air so it does not collect at the bottom.

Acetylene is also used in the aerospace and aircraft, glass, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry.
Storage and safe use of acetylene

With such a wide application that acetylene has in various industries, it is very important to understand the gas and use it safely to prevent accidents.

  • Always store and transport acetylene cylinders in an upright position
  • Use good quality cylinder valves that are designed to arrest flashback
  • The operator must be trained to use this gas safely

 Acetylene valves

For the safe use and storage of acetylene, the best quality acetylene valves must be used.  The compressed gas association has defined standards that have to be adopted for acetylene cylinder valves. The different types of acetylene valves available are either operated by hand or with a wrench.  The placement of the outlet may differ, which provides flexibility of use. Acetylene valves are usually made of brass, which offer safety and durability. The O ring and the seat placement ensure the cylinder valve is leak proof, while the bonnet nuts are secured with a pin for guaranteed tightness.

All You Need To Know About Globe Valves

Globe valves are valves with a globular body with a linear motion valve. The shape of the body has changed, though the function principle remains the same. Globe valves offer precise throttling ability for high pressure systems which is advantageous for some uses. The low flow coefficient is the biggest disadvantage for some users when the valve operating time is longer and the operator has to manually check whether the valve is completely open or closed.  Globe valves are widely used in systems that run on a wide range of temperatures, systems that require frequent stroking and vacuum.

Globe valves are used for gas as well as liquid systems. They are not advisable to be used for slurry systems as the material may become entrapped in the cavity and disable the valve operations. They can be used in a variety of applications as long as the pressure and temperature are within the limits. The space between the disk and the seat changes which allows the liquid to flow. Sometimes the direction of the flow changes which causes a change in pressure. To help maintain a tight seal, the globe valve is installed with a vertical stem and fluid stream connected to the pipe above the disk.

The globe valve is used where the flow or the pressure is to be controlled in a system. The globe valve can be operated in any position between open and close that offers precision control. This is possible due to the perpendicular movement of the disk away from the seat. The gradual change in the spacing allows the operator to precisely control the flow.

Construction of the Globe valve

The globe valve is designed in three body types: angle design, Y-design and Z-design.  The trim consists of a disk and seat ring. The disk lowers into the seat in the center of the valve to stop the flow. The position of the disk in relation to the seat allows or restricts the flow. The handwheel and disk are connected by a stem which is threaded and fits in the valve bonnet.  The seat of the globe valve may be integrated or screwed into the body of the valve. The valve is open or closed by the valve actuator which operates the stem and disk.

Advantages of Globe Valve

  • The brass globe valve is highly durable and safe
  • Fast acting
  • The control of flow is precise
  • Can be easily used in high pressure systems
Disadvantages of Globe valves

  • The opening of the disk assembly is large
  • There is high head loss
  • Globe valve is much heavier than other valves
  • The coefficient of flow is low
  • The mounting of the disk on the stem is cantilevered

All you wanted to know about balloons and balloon fillers

The sound of a popping balloon startles most of us. Balloons were invented in 1824…long ago isn’t it? Since then they have evolved dramatically. The sound that is caused when a balloon bursts is due to the quick release of the air which creates a small sonic boom. When the air is released from the balloon, it is basically the release of energy that makes the hole grow at the speed of sound in latex. This speed is much higher than the speed of sound in air. As the hole breaks the sound barrier, it creates a sonic boom.

Latex balloons are not made from plastic, but 100% latex. When made from natural latex, these balloons are biodegradable. Latex is collected from the sap of rubber trees. These trees, predominantly grow in the rain forests. A tree can produce latex for up to 40 years.

Natural latex is a mixture of rubber globules suspended in milky water. When this is exposed to air, heat or certain chemicals, it coagulates. The globules get separated from the watery portion which is called latex. This has elastic properties.

Latex balloons are used for decorations for different occasion. With the use of technology and the creativity of the designers, the single color balloons evolved into different color balloons with designs and pattern printed on it.

The use of balloons has gone up manifold which made it necessary to create a balloon inflator or balloon filler. Latex balloon filler or latex balloon inflators are the need of the hour when you need to blow up the balloons. It is ok to blow a few balloons by the mouth as that is believed to be an exercise for the lung. For blowing a bigger quantity of balloons, balloon fillers or Inflators are a necessity. The correct balloon filler is the right equipment for the leisure industry. A kit is designed with a pressure regulator and cut off function for filling the balloon to its optimum without bursting it.

Find a variety of latex balloon fillers at JTC valve Sales that allows you to monitor the pressure and comes with adjustable tips and valve. Latex balloons are either filled with air or with helium depending upon where you plan to use it.

A few party tips for balloon decoration

  • Helium filled balloons tied with a string is the best welcome item that can be given to all on arrival at the party. This automatically livens up the room
  • A small size inflated balloon can be placed on a stick on the top of a cupcake
  • String a helium filled balloon that is filled with confetti, which will shower when burst
  • Balloon garlands change the décor of the room instantly
