All You Need To Know About Globe Valves

Globe valves are valves with a globular body with a linear motion valve. The shape of the body has changed, though the function principle remains the same. Globe valves offer precise throttling ability for high pressure systems which is advantageous for some uses. The low flow coefficient is the biggest disadvantage for some users when the valve operating time is longer and the operator has to manually check whether the valve is completely open or closed.  Globe valves are widely used in systems that run on a wide range of temperatures, systems that require frequent stroking and vacuum.

Globe valves are used for gas as well as liquid systems. They are not advisable to be used for slurry systems as the material may become entrapped in the cavity and disable the valve operations. They can be used in a variety of applications as long as the pressure and temperature are within the limits. The space between the disk and the seat changes which allows the liquid to flow. Sometimes the direction of the flow changes which causes a change in pressure. To help maintain a tight seal, the globe valve is installed with a vertical stem and fluid stream connected to the pipe above the disk.

The globe valve is used where the flow or the pressure is to be controlled in a system. The globe valve can be operated in any position between open and close that offers precision control. This is possible due to the perpendicular movement of the disk away from the seat. The gradual change in the spacing allows the operator to precisely control the flow.

Construction of the Globe valve

The globe valve is designed in three body types: angle design, Y-design and Z-design.  The trim consists of a disk and seat ring. The disk lowers into the seat in the center of the valve to stop the flow. The position of the disk in relation to the seat allows or restricts the flow. The handwheel and disk are connected by a stem which is threaded and fits in the valve bonnet.  The seat of the globe valve may be integrated or screwed into the body of the valve. The valve is open or closed by the valve actuator which operates the stem and disk.

Advantages of Globe Valve

  • The brass globe valve is highly durable and safe
  • Fast acting
  • The control of flow is precise
  • Can be easily used in high pressure systems
Disadvantages of Globe valves

  • The opening of the disk assembly is large
  • There is high head loss
  • Globe valve is much heavier than other valves
  • The coefficient of flow is low
  • The mounting of the disk on the stem is cantilevered

All you wanted to know about balloons and balloon fillers

The sound of a popping balloon startles most of us. Balloons were invented in 1824…long ago isn’t it? Since then they have evolved dramatically. The sound that is caused when a balloon bursts is due to the quick release of the air which creates a small sonic boom. When the air is released from the balloon, it is basically the release of energy that makes the hole grow at the speed of sound in latex. This speed is much higher than the speed of sound in air. As the hole breaks the sound barrier, it creates a sonic boom.

Latex balloons are not made from plastic, but 100% latex. When made from natural latex, these balloons are biodegradable. Latex is collected from the sap of rubber trees. These trees, predominantly grow in the rain forests. A tree can produce latex for up to 40 years.

Natural latex is a mixture of rubber globules suspended in milky water. When this is exposed to air, heat or certain chemicals, it coagulates. The globules get separated from the watery portion which is called latex. This has elastic properties.

Latex balloons are used for decorations for different occasion. With the use of technology and the creativity of the designers, the single color balloons evolved into different color balloons with designs and pattern printed on it.

The use of balloons has gone up manifold which made it necessary to create a balloon inflator or balloon filler. Latex balloon filler or latex balloon inflators are the need of the hour when you need to blow up the balloons. It is ok to blow a few balloons by the mouth as that is believed to be an exercise for the lung. For blowing a bigger quantity of balloons, balloon fillers or Inflators are a necessity. The correct balloon filler is the right equipment for the leisure industry. A kit is designed with a pressure regulator and cut off function for filling the balloon to its optimum without bursting it.

Find a variety of latex balloon fillers at JTC valve Sales that allows you to monitor the pressure and comes with adjustable tips and valve. Latex balloons are either filled with air or with helium depending upon where you plan to use it.

A few party tips for balloon decoration

  • Helium filled balloons tied with a string is the best welcome item that can be given to all on arrival at the party. This automatically livens up the room
  • A small size inflated balloon can be placed on a stick on the top of a cupcake
  • String a helium filled balloon that is filled with confetti, which will shower when burst
  • Balloon garlands change the décor of the room instantly

Q) which is the best valve for oxygen service?

The slow opening needle valve is best suited for O2 service. Ball valves should not be used as they may pose a potential hazard by creating circumstances that are right for ignition.

Q) What kind of valve can be used for vacuum applications?

Diaphragm valves are best suited for vacuum applications due to their diaphragm and metal seal design.

Q) Should ball valves be used for throttling functions?

No. Absolutely not, as throttling causes premature wear of the side discs and packing.

Q) Is there a difference between Cv and orifice size?

Cv stands for U.S gallons flow of water per minute at 21 Deg C with a pressure drop of 1 psi across the valve.  Orifice size is the actual measurement of the size of the flow path.

Q) JTC valve sales stocks valves manufactured by?

JTC valves sales stocks all American made valves that are manufactured by Rego and Sherwood who are leading valve manufacturers.

Q) how to handle cylinders and containers when being moved?

Damage to valve or ruptured cylinder is hazardous. The handler must:

  • Wear gloves to protect against pinch injuries
  • Safety glasses must be worn to protect the eyes from injuries related to pressure release
  • Metatarsal support safety shoes are a must to protect against foot injuries

Q) what are the safe practices for moving cylinders?

  • Shut the outlet valve completely
  • Valve protection caps should be secured tightly in place
  • Use carts or hand trucks to move the cylinders
  • Do not allow the cylinders to bang or strike violently against each other
  • Do not lift cylinders by the cap or lifting magnet
  • Store the cylinders as per the NFPA codes
Q) How to test the cylinder valve for leaks?

The leak test method is used to check cylinder valves for leaks.

Everything Deserves Attention, So Does Your Gas Cylinder Valves And Regulators

Gas cylinder valves and gas cylinder regulators are devices that provide safety and control. The gas cylinder regulator has two important functions. With the movement of the diaphragm, the vent either restricts the gas flow or moves away from it when the pressure alters. Air gets sucked in through the vent. The vent has to be clear to regulate the pressure safely. The regulator exhausts the gas when internal relief valves open.

General Maintenance guideline for gas/Cryo cylinder regulators

  • Gas regulators fall into three categories as per the gas service they are used for. Corrosive, non-corrosive and mildly corrosive. If you are unable to identify the category, consult JCT Valve sales to identify the type
  • Check the connections for any leak when the gas cylinder regulator is under high pressure and low pressure. If you detect a leakage, shut down the gas source immediately. Tighten the leak and if it still leaks, shut the gas source and call the expert to prevent any casualty
  • Conduct a creep test which is a phenomenon when delivery pressure rises above the set point.  This tests the motion of the spring and ensures that no foreign material is lodged between the seat and the poppet which causes regulator failure
  • All gas regulators should be purged to maintain the integrity of the cylinder. Purging means simply allowing an amount of gas to flow through the regulator and alternately depressurizing and pressurizing the regulator with the gas. This is done by opening and closing the regulator, and  the safety valve after each cycle. Not sure of it, contact the gas cylinder maintenance experts
  • All the gas regulators should be removed periodically and inspected for proper functioning. If required, overhauling should be carried out
  • Replace the gas regulator and gas valves when its life expectancy is over. This will prevent accidents and failures
The maintenance of the pressure regulators is mandatory for safety. Follow a maintenance schedule to minimize regulator failure and downtime. Always purchase gas regulators and valves that are manufactured by companies that have all the various certifications. Safety is of utmost importance. All valves should be made from the highest quality material which is brass and stainless steel as per the usage. The valves and seals play a major role in safety.

Facts You Need To Know About Oxygen Tank/Cylinder Regulators

Oxygen was discovered by a French chemist, Antoine Lavoisier, who was born on 26th August 1743. He gave the name to Oxygen in 1778 and to hydrogen in 1783. Two third weight of the human body is oxygen and it is the third abundant element which forms about 21% of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Did you know?

·         Liquid oxygen is a beautiful pale blue at -183 degree C
·         At room temperature, oxygen is a colorless gas
·         The boiling point of oxygen is – 183 degree C while the melting point is -218 degree C
·         The symbol of Oxygen is O and its atomic number is 8

The Importance of oxygen cylinder regulator to prevent fire

There have been reports of oxygen cylinder regulators exploding during medical service, during equipment check and a few cases are reported by the fire department. The firefighter suffered burn injuries with extensive damage to property as well.

Forensic analysis recognized that the cause for the explosion was a leakage in the oxygen cylinder regulator. The gas slowly weeps out of the damaged seal and ignites due to the friction caused by the flow of the gas. Use of improper seals/gaskets/washers on the regulators is the major cause of ignition and the damage causing fire.

There are two types of washers that are used to enhance the seal at the valve/regulator interface in oxygen cylinders. The two types are a metal bound sealing washer and the other common type is the plastic crush gasket suitable for single use, unlike the sealing washer that is designed for multiple uses. The crush gasket which is usually made of nylon (CGA 870) requires higher torque to seal the interface as compared to the elastomeric sealing washers. The cylinder regulator/valve connection is designed to be tightened by hand. Any additional torque causes the gasket to be deformed, which damages the cylinder valve and regulator.

A deformed cylinder valve seat lets the oxygen leak out. Oxygen itself is not flammable, but when it flows with a high velocity it produces enough friction to heat up the washer and ignite the crushed nylon gasket. Metallic seal washers are less prone to leaks, but are not leak proof.

Safety precautions when dealing with oxygen cylinders

It is always better to be safe than sorry. Take these precautions to prevent explosions that cause damage to life and property due to fires from oxygen cylinder regulators.

  • Clear the outlet port of the valve by opening it a wee bit to let gas escape for a short time then attach the regulator to the cylinder
  • It is mandatory to follow the instructions as given in the manufacturer’s manual when attaching the regulator to the oxygen cylinder
  • Make sure you are using the sealing gasket as specified by the manufacturer
  • Check the regulator for a clean sealing washer or new crush gasket which should be in good condition
  • Inspect the regulator and CGA seal before you attach the regulator to the valve
  • The gaskets, valves, regulator must be free from any contaminants like grease or oil, which literally add fuel to the fire
  • Never use a wrench or any other hand tool to tighten the T-handle. It is designed to be tightened by hand only
  • Verify that the regulator is attached properly and the gasket is in good condition. Open the valve slowly, if gas escapes shut it immediately
