Why aluminum cylinders are the preferred choice today

Most people believe that thirteen is an unlucky number. Read this and you will probably change your mind that few 13 are awesome too. Aluminum is a metal that is widely used in almost applications from food preservation to airplanes. It is one of the most ductile, durable, flexible and recyclable metal.  Its atomic number is 13.

In 1886 two engineers, one from USA and other from France discovered aluminum. Aluminum makes up around 8% of the Earth’s crust and is found in the form of bauxite ore from which aluminum is isolated.  Did you know that aluminum gas cylinders are in existence since 1941? They were invented in France, later seamless cylinders were manufactured by the cold-extrusion method in the mid 1950s in the UK.  During the ancient times, Greeks and Romans used aluminum compounds for medical purposes, to dye clothes and as an astringent. In 1850s, aluminum was priced at $ 1200 per kg whereas gold was priced at $ 664 per kg.

Aluminum cylinders are used to transport a variety of gas mixtures. The aluminum cylinders are pressurized gas cylinders that operate safely in the most hazardous environment. Aluminum is the choice for tanks, scuba cylinders, oxygen medical cylinders, CO2 and helium. They are naturally resistant to oxidization.

Carbon dioxide aluminum cylinders store working gas at very high pressures which is used to drive pneumatic tools. The sizes available are tailored for mobile or static applications.

Aluminum cylinders have a wide range of applications in domestic as well as industrial purposes. There are a few characteristics that you must look for in an aluminum cylinder whether you want to use it for beverages or other gases or helium.

  • Cylinders must be durable, tear and crack resistant and fracture toughened
  • If using for wet gases then the aluminum cylinder should be corrosion resistant from the inside and the outside
  • The cylinders should perform well at low temperatures
  • The thick walls render the cylinders resistant to damage
  • If the external surface is brushed, it provide a low maintenance finish
  • The aluminum cylinders must meet worldwide regulatory standards
  • The cylinders must come with a training manual and safety guide
