Everything Deserves Attention, So Does Your Gas Cylinder Valves And Regulators

Gas cylinder valves and gas cylinder regulators are devices that provide safety and control. The gas cylinder regulator has two important functions. With the movement of the diaphragm, the vent either restricts the gas flow or moves away from it when the pressure alters. Air gets sucked in through the vent. The vent has to be clear to regulate the pressure safely. The regulator exhausts the gas when internal relief valves open.

General Maintenance guideline for gas/Cryo cylinder regulators

  • Gas regulators fall into three categories as per the gas service they are used for. Corrosive, non-corrosive and mildly corrosive. If you are unable to identify the category, consult JCT Valve sales to identify the type
  • Check the connections for any leak when the gas cylinder regulator is under high pressure and low pressure. If you detect a leakage, shut down the gas source immediately. Tighten the leak and if it still leaks, shut the gas source and call the expert to prevent any casualty
  • Conduct a creep test which is a phenomenon when delivery pressure rises above the set point.  This tests the motion of the spring and ensures that no foreign material is lodged between the seat and the poppet which causes regulator failure
  • All gas regulators should be purged to maintain the integrity of the cylinder. Purging means simply allowing an amount of gas to flow through the regulator and alternately depressurizing and pressurizing the regulator with the gas. This is done by opening and closing the regulator, and  the safety valve after each cycle. Not sure of it, contact the gas cylinder maintenance experts
  • All the gas regulators should be removed periodically and inspected for proper functioning. If required, overhauling should be carried out
  • Replace the gas regulator and gas valves when its life expectancy is over. This will prevent accidents and failures
The maintenance of the pressure regulators is mandatory for safety. Follow a maintenance schedule to minimize regulator failure and downtime. Always purchase gas regulators and valves that are manufactured by companies that have all the various certifications. Safety is of utmost importance. All valves should be made from the highest quality material which is brass and stainless steel as per the usage. The valves and seals play a major role in safety.
