Shut off valves are
also called as cut-out cocks. These types of valves have a wide
application in almost all services. Shut off valves are widely used in
air supply applications, drinking water application, oils and gas
application, liquid fill or vent valve on cryogenic tanks as well as LNG
fueling either as a protection device or as a control device.

The shut off valves are of three types, the sweat valve, the threaded valve and the compression valve. Shut off valves undergo
frequent handling, which may cause problems after years of use. Rather
than repairing the valve, it is beneficial to replace the shutoff valve
so that the leakage, mineral deposit and corrosion problem does not
reappear for years.

Here is a step by step guide to replace the shutoff valve
- Shut-off valves are usually connected to copper pipe by compression fitting or sweat fitting. Shut off the water by shutting the shutoff valve. Shut the electricity by shutting the circuit breakers. Drain out the water by opening the faucet. Remove the supply tube and replace the shutoff valve
- Identify the type of valve fitting. If it is a sweat valve, hold the valve with pliers, unscrew the valve system by loosening the packing nut. Remove the washer if it’s stuck in the seat. Use the flame, if required to remove the valve
- Clean the tubing, solder the valve and sand off the traces of the solder
- To replace a compression shutoff valve, cut the sleeve at an angle and hack using short strokes so as not to cut the copper tubing. Remove the valve body with a wrench. Loosen the nuts, then pull off the valve from the copper tubing
- Slide the new compression nut and the sleeve onto the tubing. Insert the shutoff valve and screw the nut snugly into the new valve. Follow the instruction of the manufacturer as to how many turns the nut should be tightened
